|My services have been retained to recruit a DIRECTOR OF FOOD SAFETY for a growing, Midwest based, multiple plant, publicly traded national food processor.
• Travel to 80% so my client will allow person to work remotely…they WILL NOT be required to relocate to HQ…can work from existing home.
IMPORTANT: My client does not wish to consider West Coast candidates as distance to Midwest and East Coast facilities is too great.
The Director of Food Safety will lead the organization in the area of Food Safety during the entire product life cycle from supplier to consumer. The Director of Food Safety is responsible for the development and execution of FSMA and other food safety regulations and customer compliance programs that extend upstream through and into the supply chain network. He/ She will develop, implement, review, and monitor all microbiology and environmental monitoring programs, sanitation SOP’s, and documentation consistency across all manufacturing operations and distribution networks. This position acts as the subject matter expert, both internally and externally, for food safety issues while mitigating risks, protecting the brand, and generating a positive brand image with stakeholders, customers, and consumers. This individual must foster a collaborative relationship among other functional areas (Operations, Sales, Marketing, R&D, Procurement), while maintaining the status as the independent authority on food safety.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide overall food safety leadership from point of origin to the consumer, with focus on manufacturing facilities, co-manufacturing, and distribution. • Develop and strengthen FSMA programs to deliver an effective food safety plan. Transition organization’s HACCP programs into hazard analysis and risk-based preventive controls, HARPC • Strengthen CGMP’s, sanitation, food defense, pest control, quality and continuous improvement of the Quality Management Program • Strengthen Environmental Monitoring program with emphasis on prevention. • Serve as surrogate subject matter expert for microbiology and toxicology and identify external support as needed to augment internal knowledge. • Lead product retrieval escalations for the sites of responsibility to ensure root cause investigation and effective corrective actions are implemented • Engage with credible external organizations in the areas of food safety. Ensure that team members do the same. • Adopt and strengthen food safety 1) awareness, 2) education, 3) training, and 4) measurement. • Know, enforce, and educate food safety staff in all matters of HR policies • Align communication systems and support senior leaders for the management of critical incidents • Anticipate and identify current and future food safety related issues that impact the business. • Demonstrate company’s leadership on food safety by participating in collaborative efforts across academicians, government, and industry. • Ensure the company’s food safety standards and procedures are in alignment with all pertinent federal, state, and local regulations • Develop food safety and sanitation scorecards • Role model the utilization of effective performance development systems, rewards, and recognition. Essential Skills and Experience: • MS in Food Science (or similar) (PhD preferred) and 12 years of functional Food Safety experience. Multiple site oversight is a plus. • Proven leadership in a commercial food manufacturing operations involving multiple functional areas. Experience with grain-based snacks, fried donuts or sweet cakes a plus. • Extensive food manufacturing experience as an onsite Food Safety leader including the management of quality professionals, conducting quality audits, and identifying/implementing root cause analysis and corrective actions. • Functional experience in the sanitation activities of food manufacturing facilities. • Strong ability to identify potential product /packaging quality opportunities, manufacturing inefficiencies, and resourcing opportunities and recommend actions. • Proven ability to work within and across a corporate organization: Quality, R&D, Operations, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Engineering. • Proven successes in continuous improvement implementation. • Data driven understanding and practical experience with traceability systems. • Experience with GFSI scheme; BRC/SQF standards, requirements, and implementation. • Experience with food industry regulatory requirements in respect to labeling, FSMA and FDA. • Excellent leader, communicator, and trainer. • Ability to influence and lead people and decisions in situations absent of a direct reporting structure. • Ability and willingness to take action. • Strong computer skills. • Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills. • Willingness to accept 80 % travel to manufacturing facilities, co-manufacturing facilities, suppliers, etc.
